Jefferson Police BadgeIf have you read the Jefferson Police reports lately, you may have noticed an increased amount of calls for service regarding homeless individuals.

Police Chief Mark Clouse says about this time every year there is an influx of homeless individuals that pass through town on their way south. Most of the time, the individuals are loitering in front of stores or are asking people for money. Clouse points out that some will ask officers for a place to stay for the evening if it’s really cold outside or a place where they can shower before heading off on their way. For those individuals, Clouse says they contact the local clergy and other resources to help get them through the night and on their way out of town.

However, Clouse notes that for certain individuals, officers have been called to intervene and they’ve issued infractions. He cautions everyone that if you encounter a homeless individual and are uncomfortable with the situation, to contact police.

“If you are approached by a homeless person and they are demanding money from you, or demanding things from you, or you feel uncomfortable, they’re screaming at you, they’re being belligerent, absolutely call the police department. And we’ll come out and take care of those people.”

The non-emergency number for the Jefferson Police Department is 386-2136 or in case of an emergency, dial 911.
