This week is National 4-H Week, and Dallas County ISU Extension Director Jeff Jackson says it’s a great time to look back at all the great things the program has done for kids all around the United States for the last 100-plus years.

Jackson says the background of how the week-long celebration began is quite an interesting story. “4-H Week got started back right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. So there’s a deep-rooted history there, and it kind of got started in the idea that we as a country wanted to celebrate something positive that we were doing in that time of tragedy. And so they really put the efforts into 4-H Week. So it’s fantastic that it’s still here and that we’re still celebrating it, and get to celebrate all the wonderful things that 4-H has done over 100 years!”

Jackson adds, Dallas County 4-H has been heavily involved in the community for a long time, and has been growing just as rapidly as the County itself. He says in the past school year, they have served over 1,000 young people in a variety of programs, as well as around 528 kids committed to an assortment of 4-H clubs. He reminds people that they can sign their children up for 4-H at any point during the year, and also says they’re always looking for volunteers to help lead the clubs and programs.
