perry library

The Perry Public Library has a new member on their staff, and his primary job is to help beginning readers improve their reading. Of course, this particular worker is special in the fact that he’s covered in fur and walks on four legs.

The library is excited to announce the “Paws to Read” program, which allows first grade children to practice reading to a registered Animal Rescue League therapy dog. Kids can sign up for 20-minute time slots with the library’s canine friend Gunnar and his handler. Time slots are from 3:40-5:40 p.m. for the first three Mondays of November, starting on the 5th. Children will read with Gunnar for 15 minutes, and then will have a few minutes to play with him. Studies have shown reading to therapy dogs is a relaxing and non-threatening way for early readers to practice and gain confidence, and the Perry Library is excited to give that opportunity to their young readers.

Permission slips must be filled out by the students’ parents before they can take part in the “Paws to Read” program. For more information, stop in or call the library at 515-465-3569.
