The Adel City Council convened Tuesday evening for their first regular session of 2019.
The meeting began with the annual garbage report for the City from Ankeny Sanitation, which was followed by the yearly report from Adel Police Chief Gordy Shepherd. In new business, the Council approved the first reading of an ordinance amending the City Clerk qualifications. They then waived the second and third readings to allow the ordinance to take effect immediately. With that in place, the Council approved the hiring of Accounting Clerk Angela Leopard as the new City Clerk, as recommended by the personnel committee. Leopard was then sworn in by Mayor Jim Peters and executed the Clerk’s duties the remainder of the meeting.
The Council then delayed action on two sewer bill waivers and appeals for leaks, pending the next meeting of the water and sewer committee. Items approved included: the designation of official publications and depositories; approval of tax abatement applications for construction completed in 2018; a resolution ordering construction for phase one of the storm water project near North 15th Street, as well as fixing a date for a public hearing and bid opening; supporting the Home Base Iowa Initiative; and the removal of Susan Way from the Planning and Zoning Commission. Finally, the Council approved an application for funding of trail projects, budget transfers, a pay request, and a pay increase for a part-time employee.
