Perry took the field Friday night with a lot of excitement for this year’s Homecoming football game, but didn’t get the result they had hoped for, falling to Webster City 50-13.

The Lynx started fast, getting several big plays on their first drive and punching it in for a touchdown on the first of two rushing scores by Trey Mathis. After Perry punted on their first possession, Webster City scored again on the first of three touchdown runs by Garrett Whitmore. The remainder of the first quarter included an interception thrown by the Bluejays, as well as a turnover on downs, and two lost fumbles inside the Perry five-yard-line by the Lynx. None of those turnovers amounted to anything for either team, and the first quarter ended with a score of 13-0.

In the second quarter it was all Webster City, as they got three total touchdowns and went into halftime up 35-0. Perry’s hopes of a comeback were dashed early in the second half, as a string of penalties eventually led to a safety for the Lynx. The visitors then scored a touchdown on their subsequent drive, and entered the fourth up 43-0. It then looked like Webster City might score again, but defensive back Jacob Nelson took the ball away from the running back at his own one-yard-line, and returned it all the way to the opposite 28-yard-line. Three plays later, Nelson called his own number and scored a touchdown on a 2-yard quarterback draw.

Webster City matched that touchdown on their next drive, but gave Perry just over two minutes to get on the board again. Backup quarterback Jeremiah Baker led the Bluejays down the field and connected with receiver Ever Tobar for a touchdown with two seconds on the clock. The game ended on the ensuing kickoff, with the Lynx spoiling Perry’s Homecoming with a 50-13 victory. The loss drops Perry to 0-6 this year, and extends their losing streak to 15 games dating back to last season. Next week they host the Carroll Tigers, and you can hear all the action live on AM 1310, FM 99.7 KDLS, with pregame at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7.
