The announcement made Monday jointly by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and Iowa High School Athletic Association gives those involved in high school spring sports in Iowa some hope they may have some sort of season. The release stated if schools resume normal classes on May 1, then there would be a spring sports season in the state, albeit a shortened one.

Greene County High School boys’ track & field head coach Chad Morton talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about that possibility. “I’m glad we’re holding out hope for the kids to be able to participate yet this Spring. Especially for those seniors to have that last chance to participate in a sport that’s important to them.”

The schedule released on Monday has May 1 as the first day spring sports can practice, if school resumes Monday 1. May 4 would be the first competition date for golf, tennis, & track & field. Morton was asked if that’s enough time for track & field athletes to prepare. “Well, if they’re not doing anything now, they probably won’t be ready for a track meet, or to perform at a high level. So, depending on what kids are doing now, doing their own workouts, I think a few might be able to, but I’d be very careful on not injuring kids and making sure they’re ready to go when we do come back.”

Governor Reynolds will announce later this month whether schools can go back in session on May 1, and that decision will impact sports this spring. Stay tuned for updates on Raccoon Valley Radio and online at www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
