Restaurants and retailers were allowed to open in Greene County starting this past Friday, as per the governor’s new proclamation that included relaxed restrictions against COVID-19 in 77 counties, including Greene.

However, there are several limiting requirements that must be followed. Greene County Attorney Thomas Laehn reminds those businesses that are allowed to open again, they are allowed to operate at 50-percent capacity. As for restaurants, Laehn says up to a group of six people can be allowed to dine together, but they must be at least six-feet from another individual or group. He reminds those restaurants that also have bars that bars are to remain closed at this time. Laehn points out that people can still have alcoholic beverages with their meals.

“So if a person goes into a restaurant and orders a meal, and then orders a mixed drink or a beer to have with their meal, that’s fine. But they can’t evade the prohibition on bars by going into a restaurant on the pretext of eating a meal and only ordering an alcoholic beverage.”

Jefferson Area Chamber Board member and Sensibly Chic Owner Rosie Tucker says most Greene County retailers have opened their doors again. However despite opening their establishments, Tucker describes how retailers would like to continue to operate.

“Curbside pick-up will continue to be the preferred option, and it seems to be working very well for the most part. Our shoppers are absolutely amazing, they’re very respectful of waiting for us to come to the door and giving our goods.”

Tucker notes not every retailer has opened their store to be public. She suggests checking with the business before making a trip to their location.
