As Iowa received rain much of last week, the state has staved off drought conditions while most farmers have gotten much of their planting completed.

This week’s report from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows portions of northeast and west-central Iowa under abnormally dry drought intensity, including most of Greene and Guthrie and the northwest corner of Dallas counties. The report states that areas facing abnormally dry conditions have corn showing drought stress, and dry soil. This is the third week of the year so far that Iowa has seen drought conditions.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report shows topsoil moisture levels rated at 0% very short, 2% short, 76% adequate, and 22% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 1% very short, 3% short, 79% adequate, and 17% surplus. The first corn condition rating of the season was also released this week with 0% at very poor, 2% poor, 17% fair, 67% good, and 14% excellent.
