re-taxes

A number of items were extended again with the governor’s public health emergency proclamation to the end of this month.

Greene County Treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen says driver’s license renewals, vehicle registrations and property tax payments have been suspended through June 25th without penalty. On June 26th penalties will go into effect if not paid before then.

Mechaelsen points out her office is back open to the public, which they will accept walk-ins for motor vehicle and property tax transactions, but driver’s license items are by appointment only. She clarifies some information regarding vehicle registration payments that have been temporarily suspended since mid-March.

“The people that we really, really need to get in before that June 26th (date) are people with a sticker of April or before without paying a penalty. You guys with May stickers, you can wait until July, but we want to get you in.”

Mechaelsen points out individuals needing to renew their driver’s license can apply for a six month extension through the Iowa Department of Transportation’s website.

“This gives you a six month extension so you would not need to hurry into our office. It would enable you to come in at your leisure time and renew your license then. So it kind of just gives you a little bit more of a cushion. It doesn’t mean that you have to wait those whole six months, it just gives you and I a little bit more time to get you helped.”

Driver’s license appointments can be made by calling 515-386-5675. All other inquiries can be made in person. A reminder for those entering the Greene County Courthouse need to use the east door and exit through the north door.
