Greene County Public Health is raising concerns about the increased number of positive cases of COVID-19 in the county.

Public Health Director Becky Wolf says as of Thursday, there were 145 cases of the virus, with 42 new cases added in the last two weeks and 27 in the past seven days. She talks about what could happen over the next few weeks.

“If we continue at this rate, we are going to double our rate – doubling the 145 – in 25 days or less. That should hopefully get everybody’s attention that this is moving quickly.”

Wolf says there are many reasons why she believes the number of positive cases has sharply increased. Those reasons include more people being tested, large gatherings where people are not wearing masks and social distancing, causing more people to be exposed.

“Everytime someone is diagnosed with coronavirus, they likely have already had symptoms for a few days before they get diagnosed, and unknowingly are exposing those that are in the closest contact with them.”

Wolf adds, COVID-19 has had an impact in every community in the county, and while there aren’t any “hotspots” of the virus, Wolf reminds everyone of some simple ways to prevent further spreading it. These measures include wearing a mask outside of your home, continually washing hands or using hand sanitizer, practicing social distancing of at least six feet and staying home if you feel sick.
