The second week of Iowa’s Healthiest State Month is underway, emphasizing eating healthy.

This week features the “5” in the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices Count initiative, encouraging eating five or more fruits or vegetables per day. Dallas County Public Health Community Health Administrator Abigail Chihak tells Raccoon Valley Radio that they promote healthy habits year-round, but having a specific time on the calendar helps remind residents just a few healthy choices a day can go a long way, “A lot of the 5-2-1-0 messaging we do promote throughout the year, but having a month to celebrate it really gives us the opportunity to highlight successes that we’ve had throughout the year so communities can come forward and show what they’ve done and share that so that other folks can jump on and try the same things.”

Last week highlighted one or more hours of physical activity daily, next week is two hours or less of recreational screen time a day, and the week of October 26th is zero sugary drinks. Participants are also encouraged to share their activities on social media with #HealthChoicesCount.
