Election Day is officially less than a week away, and today we dive into the candidates running for Iowa House District 19.

The winner will replace Republican Chris Hagenow, who announced earlier this year he is not running for reelection. The seat will not only go to a new face but a new generation. Both Republican Carter Nordman and Democrat Nick Miller are 21-years-old and graduated high school in 2017. This is not Nordman’s first time on a ballot as he ran for Mayor of Adel in 2017. Miller experienced the State Legislature, working as a clerk for Representative Bruce Bearinger, (D) District 64.

While they sit on different sides of the partisan aisle, they want to build a strong economy in Iowa.

Nordman tells Raccoon Valley Radio how he hopes to represent working families in District 19, “I want to be a bipartisan representative. If there is a solution that can be found with anybody on the House floor, I would be willing to work with them. We definitely need to be ensuring that we have a competitive tax code across the board in every aspect of taxes. With a competitive tax code, you’re going to have a booming economy. As a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, I am preparing myself to enter this workforce. I want to be able to say to my college classmates, or I want to hear them say that they want to stay in Iowa because there are high-paying jobs. And I think we’ve done a good job of that so far.”

Miller explains what his campaign has been centered around, “What we are really trying to do is focus on is our main street businesses, our small communities, our schools, as well as create a better, brighter future going forward. Our motto that we have for the campaign is, ‘Invest, Educate, and Sustain.’ Within those three categories are really a whole lot of different points. So what we are really pushing for is investing in those main street businesses in different capacities, whether those are tax credits, providing resources to our entrepreneurs, as well as focusing in on agriculture.”

District 19 encompasses much of Dallas County – apart from the five northwest townships and the cities of Clive, Waukee, and West Des Moines – and the northwest corner of Polk County. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd.
