Livestock and other animals perished in a Saturday afternoon structure fire in Jefferson.

Jefferson Fire Chief Jack Williams says three goats and a dog perished in a barn fire at 500 South Grimmell Road Saturday afternoon. The Jefferson and Grand Junction fire departments, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Police Department and Greene County Ambulance responded to the call around 2:45pm.

Williams says the entire interior of the barn was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived on scene. He notes crews were trying to keep the fire from expanding to nearby property, including the home, while also dealing with water lines freezing because of the extreme cold temperatures. Williams points out crews were on scene for almost five hours and then returned for another 90 minutes due to hotspots that weren’t detected until the smoke dissipated.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the Greene County Medical Center. No other people were hurt in the incident. Williams says the cause is undetermined due to the barn being a complete loss.
