For the second time this week the volleyball team from Greene County High School played inside the air-conditioned comfort of their gym, and like Tuesday, the Rams left the facility in the win column. Coach Chris Heisterkamp’s Rams hosted Ft. Dodge St. Edmond and the Rams won in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 29-27, 25-13. The Rams are now 3-0 in matches and 7-0 in sets. In the close sets early this season, the Rams have gone 4-0 when the final margin was two or three points. The Rams have won the other three sets this season by double digits.

Coach Heisterkamp told Raccoon Valley Radio the first two sets with the Gaels were neck-and-neck. Set two ended on a Kaylee Stalder kill. Bella Schroeder, Stalder, and Emma Shipley carried the bulk of the scoring load for the Rams, added the coach.

“Our passing was extremely better than our last night of competition, which opened up many great options for our hitters. Our passers are led by libber Katrina Heupel, plus Alexa Peters, Emma Exalt, and Grace Conklin. Blockers were a force, and challenged St. Ed’s hitters throughout the match. We had less passing errors and so many scrappy plays and girls diving across the floor to make a play. It felt like we turned a corner, to be able to fight through the fatigue and draw upon one another to pull out the grueling battle of set two. Set three had its challenges, and it would’ve been easy to give in to the exhaustion, but our girls showed amazing grit to finish the night strong,” the coach said.

The 3-0 start is one of the better marks in recent years to open a season for Greene County volleyball.
