Cub scouts is starting back up in Greene County and leaders say it is a safe and fun activity for all.

Cub Scout Master Chad Stevens of Pack 534 in Jefferson says two years ago, girls were allowed to officially join scouts and they had a few participate before COVID-19 put a halt to most of their activities last year. He talks about how girls were accepted as cub scouts, even before the national organization officially allowed it.

“Our experience, we have daughters and they kind of tagged along with us and the boys anyway. So I guess the thought was, just make it kind of a, more of a family-friendly activity.”

Additionally, a recent settlement was determined with the Scouts BSA organization and individuals who claimed they were sexually abused when they were scouts, Stevens reassures everyone that nothing like that has happened locally.

“There’s always things that are going on nationally, in the bigger metropolitan areas that really don’t affect us out here in small town America. We do have protocols in place to keep the kids safe.”

Stevens notes the protocols for adults to be scout leaders, includes a background check, several hours of online training, and there’s always two adults with every child. Additionally, when there is a girl scout, there is always a female adult leader. Contact Stevens to learn more about cub scouts at 712-830-7794.
