Even though farmers have dealt with a drought for much of the season, the crop condition is still good.

According to the latest Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report 62-percent of soybeans are rated good to excellent and 59-percent of corn is rated good to excellent. Dallas County Extension Field Agronomist Meaghan Anderson says despite everything weather-wise that has happened this year, those are still good crop percentages.

“We would like that number to be higher but so far the things that I’ve heard as far as people getting out in the field, I’m pretty optimistic about at least what some of the early numbers are coming in what this crop might be able to do even though the report is saying that we are not as good as we normally are.”

Anderson tells Raccoon Valley Radio right now farmers are focusing on harvest season and the hopes are for things to dry out so farmers can get the crops out of the field.

“We are really well set at this point as long as we continue with some good drying conditions. So, we’d like to avoid any storms or anything that’s going to knock the crop over at this point.”

Anderson says another concern is the stalk and stem integrity of the crops as she says some of the numbers appear to be going down potentially due to the stress the crops were under in some areas this growing season.
