January is National Mentor Month and New Opportunities of Guthrie County Family Development Center is looking for residents who would like to join their mentoring program.
Coordinator Rhonda Huggins says this program would allow mentors to create a special bond with a mentee. She explains the qualifications they are looking for in a mentor.
“Someone who first off, you’re good with kids, you build a good rapport with that child and become someone that they can look up to and influence them in good ways.”
Huggins points out the mentor program promotes improved grades in school, better social skills, discipline and attendance. Some of the activities that mentors have done previously include bowling or going to the library. Parents can also sign their kids up as a mentee. Mentors must attend an orientation and fill out paperwork. For more information contact the Guthrie County New Opportunities Office
