A U.S. Congresswomen is pushing for transparency to temporary closures to post offices that are reported by the U.S. Postal Service.

Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Cindy Axne introduced a bill that would advocate for transparency to how temporary post office closures, also known as emergency suspensions are reported by the U.S. Postal Service. Axne explains how important the postal service is to Iowa.

What I’m saying is our Postal Service is a part of our community, whether it’s bringing our mail to us, bringing the paychecks that people deserve. Small businesses, the money to keep the doors open, paying their vendors and all that as well. And we can’t lose sight of that. In rural America. A lot is done in our post offices across this country and we need to have the service available when it’s supposed to be.”

Axne says this bill would disclose the information following the emergency suspension that includes the date and reason for suspension, the date normal operations will resume, location and hours of the nearest facility open and a request for curbside service. Axne states this bill arises from an issue that happened with the postal service in Corning, Iowa
