Next week the Jefferson City Council will be considering the sale of  a vacant commercial property.

City Administrator Mike Palmer says the property is located at 210 West Washington Street, east of the former White Oak gas station. He talks about the background of the property that used to belong to a water softening company.

“The City had purchased that property and had it torn down over ten years ago. It was under a federal grant to actually do that. We didn’t have any money into it for the purchase or demolition. But we do have money in it for lost property taxes, and mowing it, and shoveling snow.”

A public hearing will be held prior to the sell of the property to Dennis Murphy, who wants to build a commercial meat locker. Murphy told the Council at their December 14th meeting that he plans to process up to one beef and two hogs per day from four producers. Palmer says they are looking to sell the property for $25,000 and he explains how they came up with the purchase price.

“There was a recent sale right on Washington Street where the old Larry’s (Restaurant) used to be. We just applied that same square foot price of sale to this property. That’s how we came up with that price.”

The hearing is scheduled for the next regular city council meeting at 5:30pm on January 25th.
