Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently passed the tax plan which made multiple changes to taxes in the state and one local lawmaker discusses those changes.

The tax plan that was recently signed into law included a 3.9-percent flat income tax rate as well as an elimination of taxes on retirement. Iowa State Senator for District 10 Jake Chapman talks about the impact of the tax reform.

“Look, this is a historic piece of legislation, one that I think Iowans are going to definitely feel in their pocketbooks, might be a little bit thicker than what it would have been otherwise. What this bill really does is it gets us down to one tax bracket, everyone is going to see a tax cut and another piece of this that is really important is the fact that we are able to eliminate all tax on retirement plans.”

Chapman tells Raccoon Valley Radio the tax changes will have benefits for Iowans for many years to come but Chapman says there is still more work to be done.

“I would say this isn’t the destination, this is a big step in the right direction. We have done several tax bills and we keep taking a step closer and closer to that no income tax rate and that is my goal and will continue to be my goal is having Iowa be one of the few states that has no income tax.”

Chapman says the tax changes can benefit the quality of life in Iowa by having more money in the pockets of Iowans.
