With a summer holiday weekend coming up, many people may choose to spend some time outdoors and Greene County Conservation has several parks to enjoy.

Conservation Director Tanner Scheuermann says the popular Spring Lake Park is the “hidden gem park” in the county, however to open the season a lot of work had to be done stemming from the rash of tornadoes last December.

“We actually took very extensive damage at Spring Lake Park. I think we had about 30 of the big, old growth cottonwood trees come down in the maintained area, and that’s not even to say everything outside of the maintained area. So throughout the late winter and early spring we’ve been working on that. Yeah, help from other departments, definitely want to give a big shout out to them. It wouldn’t be possible to do what we did without them.”

Scheuermann notes that while almost every weekend is reserved for the cabins at Spring Lake, he urges everyone to utilize the online booking system and those can be reserved up to two years in advance.

Scheuermann points out there are other parks including Hyde, Seven Hills and Squirrel Hollow for those who prefer a quieter camping style setting. He talks about one upgrade that Squirrel Hollow recently had with the Greene County Historical Society, Greene County Secondary Roads and Dennhardt Concrete.

“Kind of another addition to what the historical society has been doing for years. Those neat markers that we have all over the county kind of highlighting some of the historical aspects and points in history for Greene County. So another of those out there and this one talks a lot about the history of the shelterhouse and kind of the work that was done in the area to develop Squirrel Hollow.”

As his first full year as county conservation director, Scheuermann is anticipating another successful and busy outdoor season at the county parks.
