Pool consultant that led a community meeting this past summer

The information regarding a survey and options for an indoor pool in Jefferson are now available to the public.

The Jefferson Parks and Recreation Board, as well as the indoor pool committee held another public meeting last month to see the results from the community survey as a way to gauge whether or not the city should pursue an indoor pool that would be attached to the Greene County Community Center. Some of the feedback included a need for water aerobics, ensure adequate programming and making sure that the indoor pool does not take away from the established outdoor pool.

Jefferson Parks and Rec Board member Tracy Deal talks about her most important concerns with the possibility of an indoor pool.

“The biggest thing for me and one thing that the Board has talked about a lot is not only building the pool, but then what is it going to cost to operate it. So they were able to give us some of those preliminary figures of what it might cost to then operate the pool besides the construction cost of building the pool.”

The estimated project costs for three presented options ranged from $4.1-$9.4 million and the estimated operational expense ranged from $294,000-$479,000 between the three concepts.

Deal says they are continuing to investigate whether or not the city needs an indoor pool.

“This is still a feasibility study. So it’s us looking at is it feasible to proceed with this project. So this is not, ‘This is a design and we’re going to start building a pool.’ This is, ‘We are looking is it feasible to build the pool, to operate the pool, to have an indoor pool and an outdoor pool still functioning at the same time. So we’re still gathering information and learning what’s possible.”

Deal encourages anyone who wants to join the pool committee to contact JPRD Director Denny Hammen at the community center at 515-386-3412. The Jefferson City Council approved a $13,300 contract with OPN Architects to conduct the feasibility study. Click the link below to access the full presentation.
