Iowa Farm Bureau members recently traveled to Washington, DC to meet with elected officials and agency representatives from their areas.
The members that went made up 21 recent graduates of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s Ag Leaders Institute, including Jim Calvert from Guthrie Center. These Ag Leaders visited with US Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, along with Representatives Ashley Hinson, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Zach Nunn and Randy Feenstra about how Prop 12 will impact the pork industry, and concerns about the proposition.
Calvert and others also urged the lawmakers to pass a new Farm Bill to strengthen the safety net farmers receive protection from in the case of natural disasters. The trip serves as the culmination of the year long Ag Leaders Institute program which helps the participants to build an extensive background on issues in agriculture. These graduates will be recognized at the annual Iowa Farm Bureau meeting in Des Moines on December 5th and 6th.
