Monday night saw the Paton-Churdan high school basketball teams play Coon Rapids-Bayard in a girl/boy basketball makeup twin bill. The visiting Crusaders took both contests, winning the girls’ game 52-21, then completing the sweep with the boys’ victory, 88-53.

The Rockets are 1-17 while CR-B improved to 13-3 in girls; basketball. Sophomore Kaliyah Minnihan had 11 points for the Rockets with six by senior Grace Cullum and four from freshman Holly Miller. CR-B led 23-9 at intermission and they were led in scoring by Malia Clayburg with 19 points and Anna Hart with 14.

The P-C boys are 6-12 and the Crusaders are 16-1. Sophomore Trevon Keely led P-C with 23 points. The Rockets were down by just a 40-33 score at halftime. Junior Phoenix Hartman had 11 points for the Rockets. Kinnick Steimel scored six points with five from Bryce Stephenson. Unofficially, Stephenson had six rebounds with five from Hunter Saffell and four from Hartman. Rockets’ coach Josh Cerveny told Raccoon Valley Radio the game was closer than the fina score indicated. “Give Coon Rapids credit. They are a really good team and shot well.” The Crusaders had 34 points from Cal Heydon and 20 by Bryce Lewis.

It’s another Rolling Valley Activities Conference doubleheader tonight for the Rockets at Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton. The boys have a JV/varsity matchup with Woodward-Granger in Churdan on Thursday night, then the P-C regular season ends on Feb. 10 with a girl/boy doubleheader at Woodbine.
