It’s Memorial Day, and there are some things that people should remember for the holiday.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Shelby McCreedy says it’s important to stay safe for the holidays, since many people celebrate and travel. She shares a positive for the holiday as well.

“The great thing about the Memorial Day holiday, is it is kind of the unofficial start to summer. So there are a lot of people that are making plans to get out over this three-day holiday weekend. And so the one thing we want people to understand is that for every holiday, we have a focus in terms of what law enforcement is looking for, what they’re emphasizing. And the whole purpose of that is to keep people safe and to try and prevent serious injury and fatal crashes.”

McCreedy mentions that law enforcement of all levels will be out in force for the holiday to make sure everyone is safe, whether that means they travel responsibly by not driving under the influence, or that they are simply making sure that their seatbelt is fastened.
