A unique opportunity is coming to Jefferson where people can get a first-hand experience of how the state judicial branch operates.

Brandon Hommer is the Greene County Bar Association President and is a lawyer at Hoyt/Morain/Hommer Law Firm in Jefferson, and he invites everyone to witness the Iowa Supreme Court as they hear oral arguments with an active case at the Greene County High School auditorium this coming Tuesday at 7pm. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that while anyone can attend all of the Iowa Supreme Court hearings at the court building in Des Moines, this is one of the ways the high court provides a community outreach service.

Hommer notes that the oral arguments are for a case from Johnson County and according to the Iowa Judicial Branch, it is an appeal to the Iowa Supreme Court from a tenant who thought the amount of money awarded by the district court were too low against the landlord who didn’t follow proper Iowa law when showing their apartment to prospective tenants.

Hommer believes this is an important event for people to attend because the judiciary plays a vital role in the country’s democracy. He adds that the Iowa Supreme Court is a representative body of how checks and balances work with the other state branches. Tuesday’s event is free and open to the public.  Click here to see the case that the Iowa Supreme Court will be hearing on Tuesday.
