Today is the first official day of girls’ basketball practice in Iowa. Tori Ogden begins her fifth season as the girls’ head basketball coach at Greene County High School. Wins and winning seasons have been tough to come by for more than a decade for girls’ basketball here. Just once in the past 16 seasons have the wins outnumbered the losses and that was in 2017-18 at 11 wins and 10 losses. The past four seasons have seen five total victories and 84 losses, including going 0-23 a season ago.
Injuries, a lack of girls playing the sport on the lower levels, players not staying involved in basketball throughout their high school years, and changes in coaching staffs at all levels have taken place over the years.
After beginning several games last season with not more than seven or eight players in grades 9-12 combined, expectations for the 2025-26 season include having more than a dozen players out for high school basketball, breaking a 27 game losing streak, and having players stay healthy and remaining on the court for the entire season.
