Six high school band students from Adel-DeSoto-Minburn and Perry will have the chance to perform with their peers from around the state tomorrow.
ADM’s Sariah Scott (flute), Amanda Gustafson (clarinet), Clara Uthe (clarinet), Owen Horgan (trumpet) and Chase Cline (tuba) qualified for the Iowa High School Music Association All-State Band. Eden Sedars (flute) and Meredith Maddy (trumpet) were selected as alternates.
This was Scott’s third time auditioning and she was previously recalled but didn’t make the final cut. Scott describes what it was like finally seeing her name on the All-State list as a senior.
“You see people go up and they’re super excited and they’re screaming and hugging people and you’re like ‘that’s pretty cool,’ and then you see your name on it and it’s my turn. I get to do that now. It was pretty awesome to be a part of that.”
Perry’s Isaiah Christensen (trombone) talks about his initial reaction to learning he was selected to the distinguished ensemble for the second straight year.

“I was surprised because at first, I didn’t think my audition went so well until they held recalls. With recalls, I was like ‘this is my final chance to be able to get in.’ When I saw that I actually made it, I was relieved. I was happy that all this work that I had put into it finally paid off.”
The All-State Festival Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
