The Greene County and Perry High School soccer teams faced off on Tuesday night with the Jayettes winning in Perry 8-0 and the Rams winning the boys’ match 3-2 in Jefferson.
Coach Wes Anderson of the Greene County girls saw his team fall to 0-8 on the season while Perry improved to 4-3-1. While the Rams have yet to score a goal this season, head coach Wes Anderson told Raccoon Valley Radio the Rams gave up two goals in the first four minutes, then held the Jayettes scoreless until after halftime. “The girls plaoyed excellent defense and again had multiple chances to score. We had three corner kicks, which is the most we’ve had against Perry in recent years.” The coach praised goalkeeper Lucy Vander Linden for collecting more than 20 saves, and said Shia Truong-Harrison played quite a bit of varsity defense due to injuries and she showed great speed and discipline. “Her speed on defense will allow us more flexibility on attack, which is what we’ve been missing.”
Chad Black is the Rams’ head coach for the boys. His team is 5-0 at home and 7-2 overall while the Blue Jays sit at 5-5-1. The Rams led 1-0 before Perry tied it at 1-1, then took a 2-1 lead early in the second half. The Rams scored the last two goals of the night including the game winner with a little more than seven minutes left in the second half. Junior Lincoln Schwander scored the first two goals for the Rams and junior Ethan Carsten scored the last goal after his initial shot deflected off the Blue Jays. The coach said the Rams had far more scoring opportunities than the Blue Jays, but he felt his team missed too many shots from close range.
Greene County Activities Director Dave Wright announced the April 23 boys’ soccer match at Des Moines Christian School in Urbandale that was postponed will be made up at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 at DMC. There will be one varsity match with no JV.
