A deadline is today for a housing grant program in Greene County.
John Rigler III says the Highway 25 Corridor Housing Initiative (CHI) is accepting applications for exterior home-occupied improvements for communities along Iowa Highway 25, including Scranton and Churdan in Greene County, as well as Coon Rapids in Carroll County and Bayard in Guthrie County. Rigler points out that a total investment of $96,909 was made last year alone on 27 housing projects, of which 25 CHI contributed $29,888 of matching grants.
The organization points out that they serve the communities of Scranton, Churdan, Ralston, Coon Rapids and Bayard. Rigler notes that their organization provides matching grants to improve the exteriors of homes which will also give an overall upgrade to the neighborhood. Rigler says they are also offering demolition grant applications as well. He notes that the funding of these projects are 100 percent covered up to $35,000 to remove structures from a property that will improve the overall look of a neighborhood and increase its general appearance. Those applications are due July 15th and you can click the link below for an online application.
He spoke about those kinds of projects, as well as similar projects being done with the Highway 144 CHI that serves communities on the east side of Greene County at the grant award ceremony with Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation, after receiving a $100,000 grant for housing projects with Greene County Development Corporation.
“Over the past year, we’ve been able to clear three houses on the west side of the county that were dilapidated and beyond repair, and another six houses on the east side of the county and that’s been 15 total over the last two years. All of these have been turned into greenspace. Some of them have had a new jungle gym built on them and other positive uses. The neighborhood is improved in all of these situations.”
Rigler adds the Demolition Grant applications for 25 CHI will be accepted through July 15th.
