With the 2026 Iowa legislative session over, legislators now have a moment to look back on the last several months.
Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says that he believes that the session went well, especially with both chambers working on some bigger issues like property tax. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio about a few of the bills he worked on and introduced that are awaiting the governor’s signature.
“We worked through bills like HSB (House Study Bill) 635, which deals with ownership of the AI (artificial intelligence) generated content, HSB 647, which looks at guardrails around chatbots, especially making sure people aren’t misled or interacting with systems in ways that would cause harm. We also had HSB 766, which is a more forward looking piece around AI and healthcare, trying to get ahead of where the technology is going rather than reacting after the fact.”
Sorensen mentions that many of the bills he had a hand in were focused on technology and emerging policy areas, especially artificial intelligence. He adds that he’s glad that his position as the Chair of Economic Growth and Technology Committee allowed him to help the state get into a position where it isn’t behind on these issues.
