For the first time since the 1956-57 season, the Boone boys basketball team earned a conference championship after rallying to beat Perry 50-49 in Perry Tuesday night. The Bluejays led virtually the entire night only to see Boone senior Ethan Lewis catch fire in the fourth quarter. The senior entered the night leading the conference in 3 point percentage, and he showed off his touch with 4 4th quarter 3-pointers. The biggest blow came with 16 seconds left trailing 48-47 when he drilled a top of the key three from 23 feet out.
Perry had two chances to tie or win the game in the final 16 seconds. Brandon Kenyon was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 3 seconds to go but managed to hit just 1 of 3 free throws to cut it to 50-49. Janier Puente tipped the final miss to Kenyon who rushed up a desperation shot that fell off the mark sending the Boone students into a frenzy on the court.
Boone wins the conference with a 12-2 mark while Perry falls to 7-5. Janier Puente and Kyle Nevitt led the Perry offense with 18 and 15 points.
Perry will travel to Bondurant Friday night for a girl boy doubleheader.
