Downtown Perry is once again the home of a couple seasonal food stands that have already begun feeding locals and out-of-towners alike.

Rhonda Olson’s popular stand opened last Thursday next to the library to the delight of those familiar with her popcorn. The popcorn stand will be open every Thursday from now through the summer. Perry Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Wilson says people come from several cities away to have Olson’s popcorn, and he has already treated himself to some.

Further down Willis Avenue, another popular destination opened its proverbial doors as the El Tren taco truck began selling tacos out of the caboose. The Calderon family operates El Tren, which was rebranded this year from its previous name, El Mago. Wilson says there will also soon be other taco trucks in downtown Perry.

He believes it’s a good way to get people out and seeing the city. “It’s that time of year. As it’s starting to get nicer, our food trucks are opening up. People are ready to get out and about. You know, what a great way to spend a Thursday afternoon: having popcorn, maybe grabbing a taco, and ending at LaPoste, maybe something like that. So have a little stroll!” Wilson adds, he sometimes takes friends from out of town to the outdoor food stands, and he claims they’re frequently jealous that people in Perry can have them whenever they want.
