As the weather continues to be hot and lacking in steady precipitation, there are things you can do to help out your at home garden to prevent stress.
Dallas County Extension Master Gardener Coordinator Megan Will offers some tips on how to conserve water for your garden as drought conditions continue in Dallas County.
“Putting straw bedding anything like that, a good inch to two inches underneath all of your plants does multiple things. It helps prevent the evaporation from the wind and it keeps your weeds down.”
Also, Will says there are specific ways and times to water your garden, which it’s not recommended to do during the warmest part of the day.
“You want that water to go all the way through the soil down to the bottom of the roots of the plant. So, it’s better to water it deeply less often than just a little spritz every couple of days. The little spritz doesn’t do anything you need to get down deep, water deeply.”
Will adds mulching is very important to making sure plants are continuing to get the moisture they need.
