The Perry baseball team found a way to win a close game Monday night, outlasting South Hamilton 5-4 in ten innings of Heart of Iowa conference action from Jewell. Gavin Hegrstrom’s RBI single scoring Owen Myers proved to be the game winner in the top of the tenth inning. Fausto Beato earned the win out of the bullpen tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
Perry carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning and appeared to be in trouble after surrendering three South Hamilton runs to fall behind 4-2. Perry starter Owen Myers overpowered the Hawks for much of the night pitching 7 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a career high 11 strikeouts.
The Bluejays battled back in the top of the 7th inning with a pair of runs. Switch hitter Fausto Beato delivered a key two out, two-run single scoring both Geren Kenney and Juan Hernandez to tie the game at 4.
Myers was forced to leave the game with one out in the eighth inning and Beato took over from there. The hard throwing senior worked out of two bases loaded jams over the next couple of innings to set up Hegstrom’s heroics in the top of the tenth. Myers reached second on a little two out blooper to shallow left field, that was dropped by the South Hamilton shortstop. Hegstrom then delivered off the bench with a base hit up the middle scoring Myers and giving Perry the exciting late night win. The game ended at 10:20 pm.
The Bluejays finished with a season high 13 hits. Beato and Kenney led the way with three hits each. Kenney scored two runs and added a pair of stolen bases. Kain Killmer and Drake Levan each added a pair of hits. Juan Hernandez scored two runs and had a RBI.
The win was extra special for Perry following three narrow losses to start the season. The Bluejays are 1-0 in conference play and 1-3 overall. Perry will travel to State Center Wednesday night.
