With registrations now closed for the upcoming youth baseball and softball seasons with the Greene County Youth Athletic Association, the organization is looking for more volunteers.
GCYAA President Travis Warnke tells Raccoon Valley Radio volunteers are needed for everything that is involved with their spring/summer programs. He encourages anyone who might not feel comfortable wanting to help coach t-ball, baseball or softball, to not worry about that because it is all about helping the youth.
“And it’s very fulfilling as a volunteer, that’s the reason I’ve been doing this for as many years as I have. It is very fulfilling. Even if you don’t know that sport or what to do in it, there’s been lots of sports that I’ve helped with, I don’t know a clue. But the coach has told me how to coach them, they’ve shown me, ‘Hey, we’re going to this drill, make sure you’re watching for that.’ So that’s where I’ve helped them be an assistant coach.”
Warnke points out that there are other ways volunteers can help through working the concession stand during games, to cleaning up after games and field work, and umpiring, among other positions that are available on the website. He stresses that volunteers are what make their programs as successful as they can be.
“People forget, it’s all volunteer. None of us are paid. Anybody you see at anything we’re doing, they’re completely volunteer.”
Warnke notes that practices start in April, with the first games happening in early May. All of the seasons end around mid-June. He says anyone who is interested in wanting to be a volunteer to check out the descriptions on their website by clicking here and then email them at gcyaa1@gmail.com. He adds that people can also call them at 712-220-2633 but the board may not be as responsive as they would be via email.
