A Republican Iowa House candidate spoke at the Jefferson Rotary Club meeting on Monday.
Jeremy King has been working as a state conservation officer for 22 years, he is also in land sales, owns a lawn care business and has been married to his wife for 20 years. Their son is attending Southwest Community College to be an electrician and his daughter is at Panorama High School, where his family lives. The 1998 Guthrie Center High School graduate participated in football, baseball, track and wrestling, and helped out coaching as well in various high school sports. He also went to Upper Iowa University to wrestle and earned a degree in conservation. He also created a state fishing program and is related to former US Congressman Steve King, who is Jeremy’s uncle.
Jeremy said the biggest differences between him and the Republican incumbent for Iowa House District 47 Carter Nordman, are the perspectives that he has. He pointed out that he is married and raising a family, which brings separate challenges and perspectives that Nordman doesn’t have. He talked about the top issue being property tax reform. He does agree with the House’s proposal of a two percent revenue limitation for local governments and freezing property taxes for households that are owned by 65 and older individuals.
Jeremy detailed two changes to property taxes, which included a refund system if a homeowner wants a protest to their assessment at the County Assessor’s office, along with if someone’s assessment is over two percent, have the Assessor’s Office provide comparables. He also took questions from Rotarians and that he was against the use of eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines, needed to do more with improving water quality and was okay with allowing public funding to follow the student when it comes to education.
Jeremy explained that he felt it was a calling to run for House District 47.
“When I do something, I do it all the way. So, for the last 13.5 months I’ve done nothing but knock on doors, campaign, decline special interest, decline PACT money and earn this, for the most part, my own debit card and my own four wheels in my truck. So, I feel like this is something that people are sick and tired of – the insiders, the establishment running this – and this is not what they’re going to get with me. I’m going to be brutally honest. My job, I know if you guys elect and put me there, is to go to the Capitol to conduct your business and then to go home. And I want to work myself out of the job.”
King will face off against the incumbent Representative Nordman in the upcoming June 2nd Primary Election for the Republican nomination.
