A bill regarding safety planning at schools is awaiting the approval of appropriations.

House Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says that Senate File 2474 establishes a School Cardiac Emergency Response Report. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that this requires the Department of Education to prepare a report on School Cardiac Emergency Response Plans and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

“The report includes how many schools have adopted the Cardiac Emergency Response Plan, how many AEDs each school has, and where those AEDs are located. The bill gets a statewide picture of school readiness for cardiac emergencies, and improves emergency preparedness without immediately imposing a lot of new mandates, and then helps lawmakers decide whether any future action is needed based on actual data.”

Sorensen mentions that this report is to be submitted to the legislative General Assembly by January 15, 2027. He adds that that this is a good first step to know what schools already have in place, and if there are any gaps to be addressed.
