West Central Valley junior Willow Ray discusses her experience she recently had competing at the 2026 Drake Relays in Des Moines.

Ray was the lone representative for the Wildcats as she qualified for the Girls High Jump event. She shares that this was her second appearance at the Drake Relays and says that the atmosphere is incredible. Ray highlights that getting the opportunity to jump against other girls close to her level is an exciting challenge.

“Seeing how their technique is so different from mine, and yet they’re on the same level as me is really interesting. As well as just being able to sit there (and) talk with them about their experiences that they’ve been through even if we’re supposed to be competitors. I think it’s a lot of fun to be able to talk to them still, as if they’re like my friend or something.”

Ray mentions that she really enjoys watching all the athletes, from high school to college and the professionals. She finished in 13th place at the Drake Relays, achieving a height of five feet and three inches. Ray and West Central Valley will be competing in the Dave Tapps Invitational this afternoon at 4:30pm over in Van Meter.
