Coach Chad Morton’s Greene County girls’ basketball team won its fourth game in a row and improved to 4-1 on the season by virtue of a 44-40 Heart of Iowa Activities Conference victory in Jefferson on Friday night over Class 3A seventh ranked Nevada. The Cubs played without 6′ 1″ junior Kati Cassabaum (17.5 points, 9 rebounds per game) due to an ankle injury suffered earlier in the week. Nevada fell to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Greene County scored 30 points in the second half after trailing 18-14 at intermission. The Cubs went ahead 21-14 early in the third quarter before the Rams made a move to lead 30-29 heading into the final eight minutes. Greene County led 44-38 with 1:31 to play and did not score again. The Rams missed all four of its free throw attempts in the final minute, but the Cubs could only shave two points off the lead.
Greene County had balanced scoring with 12 points from Kayla Mobley, 11 by Marissa Promes, nine for Stacy Mears, and eight from Jolee Wessling. All are seniors.
Nevada had 13 from sophomore Claire Ausman and 10 by freshman Lexy Koudelka.
Greene County plays at 4A sixth ranked Perry Saturday at approximately 2:15 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
