Greene County SheriffA rash of burglaries makes the Greene County Sheriff’s Office concerned for safety and protection.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says yesterday two male suspects were arrested after they tried to steal items from a truck on the 600 block of Hill Street in Churdan.  The owner of the pickup woke up at 3:27am and noticed two males going through his unlocked vehicle.  The suspects took off in their vehicle and were followed by the Churdan resident.

During the drive on Highway 4, the subjects turned onto Highway 175 and lost a tire.  They drove to Lohrville and then fled on foot.  Chief Deputy Jack Williams, Deputy Shane Monthei and K-9 Ranger eventually found the subjects and arrested them.  Charges are pending at this time.

Then on Monday night, Sheriff Steve Haupert says there were two thefts that occurred in Scranton.  Each incident happened within 30 minutes of each other and it appears that thefts were committed by the same suspects.

Sheriff Haupert reports that a residence on the 900 block of Irving Street in Scranton happened at 7:33pm and the subjects found a spare key and entered the locked home.  They took $150-$200 in spare change from a jar and left.  The second target was on the 800 block of Main Street.  The house was unlocked and the suspects entered and took about $30 in loose change.  Those subjects remain at large.

Sheriff Haupert wants to remind the public that you can never be too safe, even in small rural communities.

“It really drives home the point that we need to be locking our vehicles and our houses.  And just keep everyone else out to be safe.”
