Several inches of rain caused water to run over several roads in Greene County during a couple rounds of severe thunderstorms last night and this morning.

The Raccoon Valley Radio Network Severe Weather Action Team provided live, wall-to-wall coverage when the National Weather Service issued two severe thunderstorm warnings for the county from 10 to 10:30pm and 12:28 to 1:35am.  Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says deputies were out monitoring the depth of water that was going over the roads, though no major highways were closed during the storms.   However, Haupert notes that the County Secondary Roads Department has closed several roads.

“There are several rural, secondary roads (and) gravel roads that are still closed.  But they’ve got barricades at those (areas).  And if there are any closures anywhere, they will have signage, so people will know not to cross them.”

Deputies also responded to two abandoned vehicles that went into the ditch this morning due to water going over the roads at 190th Street between I and J avenues and 140th Street between F and G avenues.

Haupert says since strong winds were not a factor in either storm, he doesn’t expect any property damage to be reported due to broken tree limbs.

However, in the City of Jefferson, Street Superintendent Dave Teeples says there were a few tree branches on the road, but no further damage was reported.  He added that there were a few streets, on South Mulberry and North Locust, that had to be closed due to water going over the road overnight.

He notes that the drainage system is at 100 percent capacity.  Several people may have water in their basements, but Teeples suggests to wait until their main water lines recede and most of the water will flow back into the main lines.  If you see a lot of water on the roads, Teeples recommends to contact City Hall and notify them.

The National Weather Service says southeastern Greene County remains under a flood warning until 4pm today.
