Iowa’s topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions continue to be over three-quarters short to very short, according to this week’s Crop Progress and Condition Report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 38% very short, 42% short, 20% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 38% very short, 41% short, 21% adequate, and 0% surplus. Corn is 84% in or beyond dent stage, 18 days ahead of the previous year and one week ahead of the five-year average. Over one-quarter of the crop was mature, almost three weeks ahead of last year and just over one week ahead of the average. Soybeans coloring or beyond advanced to 58%, which is two weeks ahead of last year and one week ahead of average. This is also the highest percentage dropping leaves by September 6th since 2005. Parts of Iowa received some much needed rain last week, with areas of northeast and east central Iowa receiving over an inch during the week.
