Greene County will be one of the last high school varsity volleyball teams in Iowa to begin the 2017 season. The Rams won’t play until the Saturday, Sept. 2 South Central Calhoun Tournament in Lake City. Coach Donna Carhill’s Rams have just two returning letter winners from the 2016 team that went 11-25. Senior Megan Durbin was a first team all-conference selection in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, and senior Samantha Hardaway, saw some varsity time. Both are outside hitters.
The trip to Lake City won’t be the first for the Rams. They were in a scrimmage there on Aug. 19. Once the regular season begins, Greene County will be mostly on the road with just three playing dates at home in the middle school gym in Jefferson. The Rams play at home for the first time when they host Gilbert and Carroll in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Thursday, Sept. 14. They’ll also be at home on Tuesday, Sept. 26 with Roland-Story (Story City), and on Oct. 10 vs. PCM (Monroe).
