As student athletes compete throughout the sports season they can encounter various injuries throughout the year, including concussions.
21st Century Rehab Rehabilitation Director Clint Lutterman says a lot of injuries can be about weighing the risks and the rewards. With concussions in kids, Lutterman says how they are treated has changed, as when he was in sports kids were often just asked if they were okay then sent back out to play through the injury.
“Within the last 15 years, that’s changed dramatically. I’ve been here for about 20 years and the first several years it was, ‘You doing okay?’, ‘Okay you’re good you can go back in’ and it’s completely different now. It’s good, it’s just hard sometimes for athletes and parents alike to handle that and go, okay we want what’s best for our kids but at the same time we don’t necessarily want them to just be soft and not push through things either so it’s a challenge.”
Lutterman tells Raccoon Valley Radio there will also be another sideline test available soon during games as well as the concussion recovery process.
