With some measurable snowfall that could come through Greene County near the end of the week, the County Secondary Roads Department is ready to go.
County Engineer Wade Weiss says snow removal crews are typically out around 5am with plow trucks on the paved routes following a snow event, and just before 7am are the maintainers that will be on the gravel roads. He points out that their snow ordinance says it is six inches of snowfall, but they can be out removing snow when it is close to that mark, because there tends to be blowing and drafting in some areas around the county.
Weiss explains an issue that they can run into frequently during the winter season when it comes to their sand and salt mixture that they use to treat critical areas in the county.
“Ice is the killer for the salt quantity that we use. And we had some major ice events last year and you can really burn through salt and sand in those events. Unfortunately, the last couple of years, yeah have been pretty good for snow, but the ice has been a little bit of a problem. So, we’re historically looking somewhere around 800 tons of salt a year.”
Weiss adds that at various parts across the county, they work with landowners to install snow fencing to help keep high drifts from happening, which reduces the amount of issues that they address and it keeps the motoring public more safe.
