As the situation between the United States and Iran remains unclear, one federal lawmaker acknowledges Congress’ role in these matters.

Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Zach Nunn says Congress has a constitutional responsibility to hold any President accountable for military operations overseas, in this case with Iran. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio about a conversation he had with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office of the White House.

“You know, as a veteran myself, somebody who’s been involved in conflict that seemed to have no strategic end, we had to be crystal clear with the American people and the world what we want to see here. And he and I both agreed.”

Nunn explains two of the objectives are ensuring that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon, which Nunn believes is an ideal that crosses political lines; and not allowing the number one sponsor of terrorism to re-constitute, effectively shutting off its funding from other countries and groups.

“It’s one of the reasons I’m leading the charge on the Iranian sanctions package called the “Maximum Pressure Campaign. So that they can’t get money from places like China, where the President just was.”

Nunn adds that another objective is ensuring the safety of US military servicemen and women, including National Guard troops, so that they have a pathway to get back home safely. He hopes that these objectives can be accomplished soon and the fighting with Iran to end.
